Craig Santos Perez<\/a><\/strong>, an associate professor in the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa Department of English<\/a>, has been\u00a0awarded the 2016 Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry<\/a>\u00a0in recognition of his distinctive literary merit and potential for continued outstanding work.\u00a0This is his second distinguished honor in a short period\u00a0of time; Perez also received a 2015 American Book Award for\u00a0from unincorporated territory\u00a0[guma’]<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Lannan Foundation<\/a> is a family foundation dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity\u00a0and creativity through projects that\u00a0support exceptional contemporary artists and writers, as well as inspired native activists in rural indigenous communities.<\/p>\n

The fellowship provides Perez with a monetary award, as well as a residency at the Lannan properties in Marfa, Texas.\u00a0The residency, typically four\u00a0to six\u00a0weeks long,\u00a0will afford Perez the time and opportunity to immerse himself in an environment ideal for writing among\u00a0other writers. In total, the Lannan Foundation presented $850,000 to seven authors who received either the 2016 literary award or literary fellowship.<\/p>\n

“I am honored and grateful to receive the Lannan fellowship, which will support the completion of my next book of poems,” said Perez. “As the first Pacific Islander author to receive the Lannan, I hope this will bring further attention to the literature and political issues of the Pacific.”<\/p>\n

More about Craig Santos Perez<\/h2>\n

Perez, a\u00a0native Chamorro\u00a0from Guam,\u00a0has co-edited two anthologies of Pacific literature and authored three books of poetry.<\/p>\n

He holds an MFA<\/abbr> in creative writing from the University of San Francisco and an MA<\/abbr> and PhD<\/abbr> in ethnic studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Besides teaching in the UH<\/abbr> Mānoa\u00a0English department, he is also an affiliate faculty member in the Center for Pacific Island Studies<\/a> and the indigenous politics program<\/a> in the Department of Political Science.<\/p>\n
