Recipients say they are thankful for the support. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;ve always dreamed of becoming a nurse and this scholarship is going to help a lot financially,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> student <strong>Bradley Gudoy<\/strong>, who is a former U.S. Marine. <\/p>\n<p>The Shelley Wilson Nursing Scholarship for Veterans is supporting a veteran of the war in Iraq, who served as an army medic and is pursuing her doctor of nursing practice degree at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/03\/31\/u-s-veterans-and-families-assisted-by-new-nursing-scholarship\/\">U.S. veterans and families assisted by new nursing scholarship<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/vetstonurses\">Veterans to Nursing program website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s a little bit overwhelming to know that there&#8217;s people out there that really do care about us and they want us to succeed,&rdquo; said scholarship recipient <strong>Ivrys Dukes<\/strong>. &ldquo;It&#8217;s not just about the things we did, but the things that we&#8217;re able to do in the future.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The event&#8217;s organizer, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/home\">School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene<\/a>, is also one of only 20 programs in country <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/vetstonurses\">providing college credit for veterans&#8217;<\/a> past medical experience and creating quick pathways to professional nursing and employment for service members with healthcare experience. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/mary-boland\"><strong>Mary Boland<\/strong><\/a>, dean of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, Âé¶¹´«Ã½M&#257;noa said, &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is a state of veterans. We have a huge military presence, both active duty and veterans, their spouses and their dependents. And we want to be a military friendly community. That&#8217;s really important to us.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Student veterans also have friends on Capitol Hill, according to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hirono.senate.gov\/\">Mazie K.
