  {"id":52527,"date":"2016-11-04T15:28:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-05T01:28:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=52527"},"modified":"2020-03-05T15:30:03","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T01:30:03","slug":"uh-west-oahu-new-chapter-member-of-international-education-honor-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/11\/04\/uh-west-oahu-new-chapter-member-of-international-education-honor-society\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu new chapter member of international education honor society"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_52553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52553\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/westoahu-KDP-chapter-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"399\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/westoahu-KDP-chapter-photo.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/westoahu-KDP-chapter-photo-260x167.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Officers of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s 2016 Kappa Delta Pi class<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> was installed\u00a0as a\u00a0chapter of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kdp.org\/\">Kappa Delta Pi<\/a>, International Honor Society in Education, making it the only active chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) in the state. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> is\u00a0KDP&#8217;s\u00a0879th chapter, guided through the process by Associate Professor of Education <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/default\/assets\/File\/ncate\/Curriculum_Vitae\/CV_Major.pdf\">Paula Major<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige, an educator, was the keynote speaker at the installation of the Alpha Theta Lambda chapter at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> ceremony on November 3.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kdp.org\/\"><abbr>KDP<\/abbr><\/a>\u00a0was founded in 1911. <abbr>KDP<\/abbr> has grown from a local chapter into an\u00a0international organization with an initiated membership that exceeds 1.2 million members.\u00a0<abbr>KDP<\/abbr> supports educators throughout their teaching careers using programs, services and resources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> has its first society to recognize excellence in educators,&rdquo; said <strong>Haylie Culp<\/strong> chapter president. &ldquo;It&#8217;s great to see high quality educators coming from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Inductees are required to demonstrate leadership attributes; have completed at least 30 credit hours of collegiate course work; have at least 12 credit hours in education course work programmed, in progress, or completed; and demonstrate a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or greater.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just like service learning, it builds your knowledge base and you can bring it into the classroom,&rdquo; Culp said.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> bachelor of education<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-education\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u00a0bachelor of education degree<\/a>\u00a0prepares teacher candidates to be knowledgeable, skillful, responsive educators for a global society. Course delivery occurs both on-campus and online, with flexible scheduling that recognizes candidates&#8217; busy family, work and academic responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>During their program of study, teacher candidates participate in more than 630 hours of field-based coursework, including introductory early field experiences, service learning, practicums and student teaching. Field placements occur in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education<\/a> schools island-wide and especially in Central and Leeward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and on the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast.
