“Stitch it up” workshop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Teen Health Camp<\/a> will be held on Saturday, November 19, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. at the John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM). This free, one-day event will introduce students in grades 6–12\u00a0to workshops and interactive skill demonstrations presented by JABSOM<\/abbr> medical students. Community healthcare professionals and resource professionals from University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a> will also present a variety of career options in the health professions.<\/p>\n

The main purpose of Teen Health Camp is to encourage students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare. Said\u00a0Health Careers Opportunity Program<\/a> (HCOP) Director Agnes Malate,\u00a0“Any student who participates in Teen Health Camp will meet professional role models from their communities and come away with the understanding that there is a wealth of challenges, personal qualities and technical skills inherent in the health-care industry.”<\/p>\n

JABSOM<\/abbr> medical students are interested in promoting social justice by recruiting a diverse and community based healthcare labor force for underserved areas of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. It is important to expand the healthcare professions and increase diversity and cultural competency within the profession. HCOP<\/abbr>\u00a0encourages Native Hawaiians, Filipinos, Pacific Islanders\u00a0and other underrepresented groups to attend the Teen Health Camp. Studies indicate that disadvantaged and underrepresented students are more likely to enter lucrative professions in health care when they receive relevant mentoring and career counseling services in high school or earlier.<\/p>\n
