Results from this National Institutes of Health-funded study will delineate a new antiviral pathway and identify a novel host antiviral target for\u00a0treatment of flavivirus encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p>Kumar, an assistant professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> and associate director of its Biocontainment facility, notes that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is particularly at risk for transmission of mosquito-borne viruses. &ldquo;Our state&#8217;s year-round tropical climate favors abundant mosquitoes, and attracts a high influx of visitors from all over the world, including countries where these diseases are endemic,&rdquo; said Kumar.<\/p>\n<p>Kumar is collaborating with <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa colleagues <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/?page_id=473\">Vivek R. Nerurkar<\/a><\/strong>, Chair of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/tropicalmedicine\/\">Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology<\/a>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/pceidr.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/guest\/Guest.vm?method=homePage&#038;id=2\">Richard Yanagihara<\/a><\/strong>, Principal Investigator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/offices-programs\/pceidr\/\">Pacific Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/\">The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health<\/a> are funding the study.<\/p>\n<h2>Developing therapeutic interventions<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;Our long-term goal is to develop effective therapeutic interventions for the clinical management of mosquito-borne viruses,&rdquo; said Kumar.
