Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami will give a free public reading and talk, What I Talk About When I Talk About Writing, on Tuesday, April 10, 7:30 p.m. at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a> Campus Center Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and seating will be on a first–come, first–served basis.<\/p>\n

Murakami, who has gained an international following with his daringly original fiction, will read the short stories “The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes” and “The Mirror” from the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Murakami is best known for his novels Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World<\/em> (1985), Norwegian Wood<\/i> (1987), The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle<\/em> (1994–95), Kafka on the Shore<\/em> (2002) and, most recently, 1Q84<\/em> (2009–10).<\/p>\n

His many awards include the 2006 Franz Kafka Prize, the 2006 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the 2009 Jerusalem Prize and the 2011 Catalonia International Prize.<\/p>\n

According to a recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine<\/em>, “Three decades into his career, Murakami has established himself as the unofficial laureate of Japan—arguably its chief imaginative ambassador, in any medium, to the world.”<\/p>\n
