Eight faculty members from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fudan.edu.cn\/en\/\">Fudan University<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.whu.edu.cn\/\">Wuhan University<\/a> in China&#8212;including Wen Chen, dean of the Fudan School of Public Health&#8212;attended the summit at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center&#8217;s<\/a> Jefferson Hall.<\/p>\n<p>During the summit, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa signed an agreement with Fudan University for 2016&#8211;2021 renewing the decade-long collaboration between the <abbr title=\"Office of Public Health Studies\">OPHS<\/abbr> and Fudan University School of Public Health. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr>-Fudan agreement formalizes a <abbr title =\"Bachelor of Science\/Master of Science\">BS\/MS<\/abbr> fast track program, also called the 4&#43;1&#43;1 Program. Students who pursue and successfully earn bachelor degrees at Fudan in preventive medicine study may then pursue a fast-track master&#8217;s degree in public health at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/executives\/president.html\">David Lassner<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">School of Social Work<\/a> Dean <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/faculty&#038;staff\/noreen.html\">Noreen Mokuau<\/a><\/strong> and <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> Director <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/directory\/kathryn-braun\">Kathryn Braun<\/a><\/strong> gave opening remarks, emphasizing the value of and their support for international exchange and collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The successful 10-year relationship between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and Fudan University in public health is testament to the evolving need for international partnerships on global health,&rdquo; stated Mokuau.<\/p>\n<p>The summit&#8217;s main purpose was to highlight and promote academic exchange and research between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and China. Summit speakers shared views on health policy and reform, aging, environmental degradation and global health challenges&#8212;all important areas of public health.<\/p>\n<h2>Developing research through international exchange<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50872\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-OPHS-healthsummit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"284\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-OPHS-healthsummit.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-OPHS-healthsummit-260x119.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skip Burkle, Senior Fellow with Harvard&#8217;s Humanitarian Initiative, addresses summit attendees.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;More than 125 Chinese students and faculty have visited <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>, and more than 80 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students and faculty have visited China. They all have benefited from this international exchange program by developing research credentials and experience,&rdquo; said <strong>Yuanan Lu<\/strong>, the professor who has led <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> since 2007. &ldquo;The objective of our <abbr>UH<\/abbr>-China program is to enhance public health education globally and to promote international cooperation with China, the most populated country in the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Over the past ten years, <abbr title=\"Office of Public Health Studies\">OPHS<\/abbr> has worked with four leading schools of public health in China, including Fudan and Wuhan universities. Besides student and faculty exchange, research collaborations between <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> and China have resulted in more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in environmental health, social and behavioral health, health policy and management and epidemiology.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> pioneered fast-track degree programs at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, with its first agreement with Wuhan University in 2008. To date, <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> has developed such agreements with four universities in China&#8212;Wuhan, Fudan, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Nanchang.\u00a0<abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> also has agreements in place with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kit.edu\/english\/\">Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/a> (Germany), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u-tokyo.ac.jp\/en\/index.html\">the University of Tokyo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.korea.edu\/\">Korea University<\/a> and Catholic University of Korea.<\/p>\n<p>To further strengthen the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/abbr>-China partnership, <abbr title=\"Office of Public Health Studies\">OPHS<\/abbr> has established the China-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Public Health Exchange Fund at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation.
