  {"id":50805,"date":"2016-09-28T15:31:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T01:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=50805"},"modified":"2020-01-07T11:49:15","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T21:49:15","slug":"student-team-receives-top-honors-at-hawaii-annual-code-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/09\/28\/student-team-receives-top-honors-at-hawaii-annual-code-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Student team receives top honors at Hawai\u02bbi Annual Code Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fx9EGhxjhnI?showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A team of students from <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/cent\">Computing, Electronics, Networking Technology<\/a> (<abbr>CENT<\/abbr>) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-applied-sciences\/information-security-and-assurance\/\">Information Security and Assurance<\/a> program at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> tied for first place in the <a href=\"http:\/\/hacc.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Annual Code Challenge<\/a> (<abbr>HACC<\/abbr>). Founded at Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, the team, called <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Advanced Technology Society (<abbr>HATS<\/abbr>), won $5,000 and the opportunity to interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/bluestartups.com\/\">Blue Startups<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xlr8uh.com\/\"><abbr title=\"accelerate U H\">XLR8UH<\/abbr><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>HACC<\/abbr> was the culmination of the month-long, hackathon-inspired competition designed to engage the local tech community in the modernization of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> state government. The judging and awards ceremony was held on September 24 at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. The winning project, <a href=\"http:\/\/devpost.com\/software\/hats-team-occc-family-visitation-scheduling-cew3rm\"><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Community Correctional Center Family Visitation Scheduling<\/a>, provides a sustainable and organized web-based solution for family and friend visitations at the facility.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Many of our students put an average of 30 hours into the project, with key contributors putting an upwards of 60-80 hours over the course of the last three weeks,&rdquo; said <abbr>HATS<\/abbr> Lead Project Manager <strong>Jayson Hayworth<\/strong>. &ldquo;We came together as a team to implement and interface three different components of the project to fit the <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Community Correctional Center Visitation Scheduling&#8217;s business needs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He continues, &ldquo;The <abbr>CENT<\/abbr> program gives us a strong foundation to be able to accomplish anything we set our minds towards. The curriculum encourages self-learning and self-discipline while giving students the foundation needed to explore other advanced topics. I think I speak for all of our team members when I say none of this is possible without the entire <abbr>CENT<\/abbr> faculty.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven teams presented solutions to the <abbr title=\"Hawaii Annual Code Challenge\">HACC<\/abbr> judges panel, which included Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/governors-bio\/\">David Y. Ige<\/a>, Senator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/memberpage.aspx?member=wakai\">Glenn Wakai<\/a>, state Chief Information Officer (<abbr>CIO<\/abbr>) <a href=\"http:\/\/ets.hawaii.gov\/todd-nacapuy-chief-information-officer-state-of-hawaii\/\">Todd Nacapuy<\/a> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President of Information Technology and <abbr>CIO<\/abbr> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/executives\/cio.html\">Garret Yoshimi<\/a><\/strong>.
