The <abbr>ECHO<\/abbr> program will investigate how exposure to a range of environmental factors in early development&#8212;from conception through early childhood&#8212;influences the health of children and adolescents. <\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> has been selected to build state-of-the art pediatric clinical research networks in rural and medically underserved areas, so that children from these communities can participate in clinical trials. The medical school will partner with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\/health-professionals\/research-institute\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health Research Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\/kapiolani\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women and Children<\/a> and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> professor and community pediatrician <strong>May Okihiro<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcchc.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast Comprehensive Health Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We think this is going to transform the availability of clinical trials to benefit infants, children and adolescents with the most need in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Principal Investigator Bruce Shiramizu, professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiresidency.org\/pediatric-residency\/pediatric-residency-home\">pediatrics<\/a> at the school of medicine.<\/p>\n<h2>Three main focus areas<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, three main areas of emphasis for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> site will be the health of infants before and after birth, obesity in children and adolescents and respiratory diseases, including asthma suffered by children and teens. Future plans will be to include clinical trials involving neurocognition. These four areas are the initial key focus areas for <abbr>ECHO<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>University physicians in the John A. Burns School of Medicine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiresidency.org\/pediatric-residency\/pediatric-residency-home\">Department of Pediatrics<\/a>, assisted by those in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiresidency.org\/ob-gyn-residency\/ob-gyn-home\">Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women&#8217;s Health<\/a>, will collaborate with their peers on a national level to develop new clinical trials that will involve the children of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. The first of the clinical trials could happen within a year of the four-year grant awarded this week.<\/p>\n<h2>Clinical trials<\/h2>\n<p>When they begin, the clinical trials will be open to children and adolescents in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at the greatest risk for health problems&#8212;Native Hawaiians, part-Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, Filipinos and other Asians as well as children and teens of low-income families and underserved communities.
