The awards are worth $4,000,000 and will provide student scholarships to Native Hawaiian and other students from underrepresented populations. These funds will support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (<abbr title=Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics\">STEM<\/abbr>) Program in recruitment of Native Hawaiian students for its Associates in Science and Natural Sciences degree.<\/p>\n<h2>Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics<\/h2>\n<p>The Scholarships in <abbr title=Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics\">STEM<\/abbr> (S-STEM) award will provide $1,000,000 for a total of 10 scholarships to annual cohorts of sophomores, transferring juniors and completing seniors for implementation of the project, &ldquo;Cohorts Concentrating on Completing and Competing in the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Technical Workforce (C4) in Urban Polynesia.&rdquo; The project&#8217;s goal is to develop financial and programmatic supports for talented, low income Native Hawaiian and other underrepresented students to complete the College&#8217;s two-year associate in science in natural sciences (ASNS) degree, successfully transfer and persist in their junior and senior years. These students are intended to complete a four-year baccalaureate degree at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> and other research institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>S-STEM<\/abbr> award builds on the success of <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College&#8217;s <abbr>S-STEM<\/abbr> project led by <strong>Robert Moeng<\/strong> and <strong>Patz Yamashiro<\/strong>, who served as the principal investigator and the co-investigator, respectively, for this project. Under their leadership, a total of 105 <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> majors received scholarships, and 70 successfully completed an <abbr>ASNS<\/abbr> degree or transferred to a <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>-related baccalaureate degree origran, &ldquo;Students who received scholarships funded by our prior <abbr>S-STEM<\/abbr> grant demonstrated improved success, persistence and graduation\/transfer rates,&rdquo; explained Moeng.<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-Engineering Education Collaboratives<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr> pre-Engineering Education Collaboratives (PEEC) award will provide nearly $3,000,000 to fund a collaborative research project entitled, &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>PEEC<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr>&rdquo; to build capacity at Native Hawaiian serving institutions to prepare students for <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> degree completion, seamless transfer and entry into the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> workforce. <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College will lead a six-campus team of University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> campuses, which includes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa College of Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\">Maui College<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward<\/a> Community Colleges.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>PEEC<\/abbr> <abbr>II<\/abbr>&#8217;s benefits are twofold: In addition to its practical application to build capacity to improve Native Hawaiian graduation, transfer, and persistence rates, the project will provide insight through its collaborative research structure to implement, investigate and evaluate the effect of discipline-specific undergraduate research on student success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kapi&#699;olani <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> received $4,000,000 from the National Science Foundation for scholarships for Native Hawaiian and other students from underrepresented populations. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25],"tags":[179,62,65,9,60,66],"class_list":["post-50451","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-academic-news","tag-college-of-engineering","tag-honolulu-community-college","tag-leeward-community-college","tag-uh-manoa","tag-maui-college","tag-windward-community-college","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50451","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=50451"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50451\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":81222,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50451\/revisions\/81222"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=50451"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=50451"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=50451"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
