The collaboration began shortly after the March 2011 disaster events that struck Japan, including the powerful earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami. The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant <\/a>program have been working with Tohoku ever since.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This research collaboration has been amazing,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/about\/about-the-dean.html\"><strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong><\/a>, dean of the College of Social Sciences. &ldquo;We&#8217;ve been able to take the science but also the human aspect of disasters, elevate our understanding of that to new and higher levels.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The partnership that we&#8217;ve with the College of Social Sciences and now, of course, with Tohoku University is a really great example of the need to bring together the physical, natural and social sciences to solve these problems,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/darren-lerner-phd\"><strong>Darren Lerner<\/strong><\/a>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant director.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This multidisciplinary approach is very important,&rdquo; said Tohoku University&#8217;s Yuichi Ono. &ldquo;We are very good at our physical sciences and we try to increase our social science perspectives but we are still developing. And <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, has very good social scientists there so we want to collaborate to fill in the gap and work together.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50247\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-social-science-tohoku-260x148.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"148\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-social-science-tohoku-260x148.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-social-science-tohoku.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former students of Sendai Ikuei Gakuen High School express gratitude to their host families in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for taking them in after the 2011 tsunami impacted their hometown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> and Tohoku share the latest disaster science and bring leading national and international experts together.
