Cardello is one of only a handful of undergraduates in the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> to be awarded the scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The Consul General of Japan in Honolulu will formally present the honor to Cardello during the September 15 ceremony. Cardello will leave for the one-year study in Japan at the Kyoto University soon after. The Monbukagakusho Scholarship covers tuition and living expenses, and also provides stipends.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese instructor and <abbr>MEXT<\/abbr> Coordinator <strong>Miki Ogasawara<\/strong> helped Cardello through the application process. She notes, &ldquo;Joseph&#8217;s language proficiency is of the highest level. All of us in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eall\/\">Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a> are excited that he will realize his dream of going to Japan to continue his study.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Instructor Ogasawara has helped me through the scholarship process, and has been an excellent advisor during my entire time at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii at Manoa\">UHM<\/abbr>,&ldquo; said Cardello. &rdquo;I would also like to thank Japanese Professor Kazue Kanno and the members of the Consulate General of Japan.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While in Japan, Cardello wants to learn about, and gain a deeper appreciation of, traditional arts such as <em>chado<\/em> (tea ceremony) and <em>kabuki<\/em> and <em>noh<\/em> (theater). <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50222\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-japanese-award-group.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"261\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-japanese-award-group.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manoa-japanese-award-group-260x109.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Consul Masamori Kobayashi, 2008 Monbukagakusho Scholarship recipient Paul Iinuma, Consul General of Japan Yasushi Misawa, Joseph Cardello, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Professor Kazue Kanno and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Instructor Miki Ogasawara.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>More about Joseph Cardello<\/h2>\n<p>Cardello, a native of Londonderry, New Hampshire, moved to Honolulu to pursue his <abbr title=\"Bachelor of Arts\">BA<\/abbr> at M&#257;noa. &ldquo;I had heard great things about the cultural diversity and foreign language programs at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii at Manoa\">UHM<\/abbr>. When I came for a visit, I was awed by the depth of the Japanese program and very impressed with the faculty. My high expectations were reached and exceeded!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p> &ldquo;After I earn my <abbr>BA<\/abbr>, I plan on going to graduate school to further study Japanese language and literature.
