  {"id":48491,"date":"2016-08-09T10:45:23","date_gmt":"2016-08-09T20:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=48491"},"modified":"2020-03-13T12:22:04","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T22:22:04","slug":"cancer-treatment-algorithm-developed-by-uh-cancer-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/08\/09\/cancer-treatment-algorithm-developed-by-uh-cancer-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer treatment algorithm developed by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_48495\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48495\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/manoa-cancer-center-okimoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"412\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/manoa-cancer-center-okimoto.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/manoa-cancer-center-okimoto-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gordon Okimoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> researchers developed a computational algorithm to analyze &ldquo;big data&rdquo; obtained from tumor samples to better understand and treat cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A growing problem in cancer research is figuring out how to analyze the many kinds of big genomic data for different cancers,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/about-us\/2-directory\/107-gordon-s-okimoto-phd\"><strong>Gordon Okimoto<\/strong><\/a>, co-director of Biostatistics and Informatics Shared Resource at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center. &ldquo;The overwhelming quantity and complexity of the data has created an analysis bottleneck that has slowed the translation of the knowledge within the data to the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have figured out a way to mine these data for the benefit of cancer patients.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Okimoto and collaborators developed a computational algorithm called the Joint Analysis of Many Matrices by ITeration (JAMMIT). <abbr>JAMMIT<\/abbr> uses advanced mathematics to identify different patterns across multiple molecular data types such as gene expression and genetic mutations that when taken together accurately predicts what treatments would be best for a given cancer patient.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The algorithm could accelerate the approval of powerful treatments for many cancers, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce costs for treating cancer,&rdquo; said <strong>Randall Holcombe<\/strong>, incoming director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center. &ldquo;I believe this discovery can open a path to more precision medicine clinical trials that could be initiated and run locally in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Algorithm use on liver and ovarian cancer<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/biodatamining.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13040-016-0103-7\">findings published in <em>Biodata Mining<\/em><\/a> highlight <abbr>JAMMIT<\/abbr> analysis of ovarian and liver cancer data pulled from private research labs and public databases such as <a href=\"http:\/\/cancergenome.nih.gov\/\">The Cancer Genome Atlas<\/a>, a National Cancer Institute data archive. The analysis identified small sets of genes that accurately predict which patients would benefit most from chemotherapy. These same signatures also suggest that many of the ovarian and liver cancer patients studied would benefit from combining chemotherapy with immunotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>Okimoto plans on analyzing the data for dozens of more cancers.<\/p>\n<h2>TeamLiver data<\/h2>\n<p>The liver cancer results were based in part on tissue samples collected locally by the liver cancer working group (TeamLiver). TeamLiver includes about 15 researchers and physicians from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center and local hospitals that make up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/research\/10-research\/24\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Consortium<\/a> collaborating on liver cancer research for more than 4 years. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> has one of the highest rates of liver cancer in the nation and the second highest liver cancer mortality rate in the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Facts and Figures).<\/p>\n<h2>Startup based on <abbr>JAMMIT<\/abbr> technology<\/h2>\n<p>Okimoto and Thomas Wenska started SNR Analytics, Inc.
