There are two tracks&#8212;H&#257;Kilo (ecology) or &#699;IKE (engineering) that feature learning and work opportunities in these fields each afternoon. Over the summer, students not only learn about college, they also explore the relevance of modern science and engineering to sustainability and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s past, present and future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48385\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/system-summer-bridge-paper1.jpg\" alt=\"Students investigating a tree\" width=\"200\" height=\"293\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/system-summer-bridge-paper1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/system-summer-bridge-paper1-177x260.jpg 177w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students on a field trip<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Evaluating the program<\/h2>\n<p>To evaluate program efficacy, the researchers developed a nine-question survey to measure familiarity with geoscience majors, perceptions about geoscience, self-efficacy and desire to pursue geoscience majors and careers. Sixty-four students participated in the program over a three-year period. Approximately two-thirds of students are from groups that are underrepresented in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> and approximately one-third are Native Hawaiian. Only a small number of these students expressed interest in geoscience majors prior to program participation, and many were not even aware that geoscience majors existed.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the weeklong program, the students showed learning gains on all nine questions, and eight of these gains were statistically significant. To date, five summer bridge alumni (four Native Hawaiian) have declared geoscience majors, representing 31 percent of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s Native Hawaiian geoscience enrollment.
