Derrik Matsumoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> ʻohana<\/span> is missing a member of their work family and a devoted member of the facilities team. Derrik Matsumoto<\/strong> unexpectedly passed away July 24. He was 48 years old.<\/p>\n

Derrik is survived by his mother, Lois and older brother, Kevin. Derrik was predeceased by his father Toshitake.<\/p>\n

Derrik joined JABSOM<\/abbr> in September 2010 where he worked in the mail room. He will be remembered for his friendly and polite demeanor and his extraordinary ability to carry his ever-present 64-ounce thermal mug while handling a dolly with his free hand.<\/p>\n

Derrik had a very good voice and enjoyed singing karaoke with his friends. His favorite music was country-western. Derrik liked spending hours fishing. When not at work, you could find Derrik in the back of his pick-up truck with his friends along the shore with his fishing poles. In bygone years, Derrik frequently rode his motorcycle with friends.<\/p>\n

With his positive demeanor and cheery greeting, he had the uncanny ability to lift one’s spirits every time he came across someone while making his daily rounds. Many will remember Derrik with his exaggerated smile and his hand extended up in the air as he walked by. The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and especially those at JABSOM<\/abbr> will miss him. The thought of Derrik Matsumoto brings a smile to one’s face. Rest in peace, Derrik.<\/p>\n
