Brian Bissen, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa sophomore; David Lassner, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> president; Don Straney, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo chancellor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/\">Kamehameha Schools<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> have launched Makalapua <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span>, a unique four-year pilot scholarship program that aims to increase the four-year graduation rate of Native Hawaiian students by providing necessary funding as well as intensive student support services.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Makalapua <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> financial aid pilot program is an innovative, life-changing opportunity for our <span aria-label=\"upio\">&#699;&#333;pio<\/span> to successfully complete their college education,&rdquo; said Jack Wong, Kamehameha Schools <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This key partnership exemplifies and personifies what can happen when meaningful collaboration happens between two organizations who are committed to the success of learners throughout <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha presented <abbr>UH<\/abbr> with a $1.18 million check in July 2016, the first of four donations, to fund the Makalapua <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This generous gift is a great example of Kamehameha Schools support of our shared commitment to advancing Native Hawaiian student success,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/executives\/president.html\">David Lassner<\/a><\/strong>. &ldquo;The pilot project we are launching emerged from our institutional Hui <span aria-label=\"Hoopili Aina\">Ho&#699;opili &#699;&#256;ina<\/span> partnership and will provide financial aid and student support services to help participating students on a path to graduate in four years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Along with improving Native Hawaiian student success, the Hui <span aria-label=\"Hoopili Aina\">Ho&#699;opili &#699;&#256;ina<\/span> partnership between the two educational institutions also aims to revitalize Hawaiian knowledge and language and create a sustainable <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More about the partnership<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/09\/kamehameha-schools-and-uh-partner-to-increase-educational-success-of-native-hawaiians\/\"><em>Kamehameha Schools and Âé¶¹´«Ã½partner to increase educational success of Native Hawaiians<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/16\/paths-to-native-hawaiian-success-identified-in-kamehameha-partnership\/\"><em>Paths to Native Hawaiian success identified in new Kamehameha partnership<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Helping students with a strong start and continued support<\/h2>\n<p>In the first of year of the Makalapua <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> program, four participating <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> campuses&#8212;M&#257;noa, Hilo, Maui College and West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8212;will accept a cohort of up to 100 Native Hawaiian students who will be full-time sophomores in the 2016\u20132017 academic year. Each student will be offered a scholarship of varying amounts for a maximum of four years or upon earning a bachelor&#8217;s degree. In addition, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa will accept up to 50 freshman students from the 2016 graduating class of Kamehameha Schools&#8217; Kap&#257;lama, <span aria-label=\"Keaau\">Kea&#699;au<\/span>, or Pukalani campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The four-year pilot will provide Makalapua <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> students with support services including peer mentoring, tutoring, culturally rich learning opportunities, networking with faculty and researchers and career exploration and planning. Feedback and data will be used to reassess student support and funding services.
