  {"id":4801,"date":"2012-03-06T12:55:44","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T22:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=4801"},"modified":"2021-04-23T15:16:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-24T01:16:50","slug":"pono-corporation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/03\/06\/pono-corporation\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> technology will be commercialized"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_4919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4919\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cancerbachmann.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Andre Bachmann in lab coat\" title=\" \" width=\"400\" height=\"314\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4919\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cancerbachmann.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/cancerbachmann-260x204.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Technologies developed by Andr&eacute; Bachmann and other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> researchers will be commercialized by Honolulu-based Pono Corporation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Three technologies developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> are now owned by Honolulu-based Pono Corporation under an agreement that will allow <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> to realize the value of the technologies sooner than it would with a traditional licensing deal due to long drug development timelines.<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of a technology commercialization agreement signed by the university&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otted.hawaii.edu\">Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development<\/a> with Pono, the university receives equity stake in the company and is now a shareholder in Pono in exchange for an assignment of the technologies.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are evolving our technology transfer process to speed commercialization of early-stage technologies developed at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>M.R.C. Greenwood<\/strong>. &ldquo;The agreement with Pono will allow the university to participate side-by-side with other Pono shareholders and founders as technology developed at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is commercialized.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The agreement gives Pono ownership of three <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>-developed technologies, including a proteasome inhibitor drug, humanized cobra venom factor, and a hybrid nanocarrier drug delivery system.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Pono is honored to have the opportunity to build on the work done at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> by moving forward with the commercialization of these technologies,&rdquo; said Kaleo Taft, Pono&#8217;s chief technology officer.<\/p>\n<p>Pono will work to develop the technologies under the agreement with a focus on moving them through the regulatory approval process.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are looking forward to this promising opportunity to work with the company towards the clinical development of our novel anti-cancer drugs,&rdquo; said <strong>Andr&eacute; S. Bachmann<\/strong>, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Pharmacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bachmann is one of the inventors of the proteasome inhibitor discovery and a co-inventor of the nanocarrier drug delivery system with <strong>Mahavir Chougule<\/strong>, assistant professor at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo College of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<h2>About the technologies<\/h2>\n<p>The proteasome inhibitors discovered by Bachmann and his collaborators are a new class of compounds potentially useful for anti-cancer and other therapeutic uses.
