Approximately 120 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> high school students and teachers participated in a week long\u00a0GenCyber <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> high school camp\u00a0that started  June 6 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>.\u00a0The week culminated at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u00a0at M&#257;noa<\/a> with a Grand Challenge that incorporated coded clues that participants had to solve using cybersecurity concepts, tools and skills learned during the week.<\/p>\n<p>During the closing ceremony, students, teachers and parents heard from Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/governors-bio\/\">David Ige<\/a>, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Vice President <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/executives\/cio.html\">Garret Yoshimi<\/a><\/strong> and the Commander of National Security Agency <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Captain Cliff Bean on the strategic importance on cultivating cybersecurity professionals in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. There was also a mini career fair set up for parents and students to learn more about career opportunities in the cybersecurity industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without constantly updating your knowledge, you could end up with as little as 15 percent technical relevancy within just five years. In this environment, it&#8217;s not what you know, as much as how fast you can learn that matters,&rdquo; said Bean.\u00a0&ldquo;With the increasing number of cyber attacks and the number of connected devices and data, the importance of hiring locally for National Security Agency <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is critical.&rdquo;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the second year of the program, students learned about ethics, cryptography, coding, networking and security. A total of four introductory and intermediate\/advanced tracks were taught at Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, with one track running concurrently at <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>.
