  {"id":46983,"date":"2016-06-14T09:51:22","date_gmt":"2016-06-14T19:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=46983"},"modified":"2019-02-07T16:18:25","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T02:18:25","slug":"uh-playing-important-role-in-nasa-coral-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/14\/uh-playing-important-role-in-nasa-coral-study\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> playing important role in <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> coral study"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/clkijrMr2Uw?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/himb\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> is playing a significant role in <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/airbornescience.jpl.nasa.gov\/campaign\/coral\">Coral Reef Airborne Laboratory<\/a>, a 15-million dollar three-year field study of Earth&#8217;s coral reef ecosystems announced in June 2016. A sophisticated new <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> airborne instrument called <abbr>PRISM<\/abbr> will fly at 28,000 feet and survey reefs at multiple locations from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The traditional way of surveying coral reefs is to put a mask and scuba tank on,&rdquo; explained Eric J. Hochberg, an associate scientist from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bios.edu\/#!\/healthier-oceans\">Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences<\/a> and the principal investigator on the project. &ldquo;If you wanted to survey <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K&#257;ne&#699;ohe<\/span> Bay in detail, complete coverage, it would take you months, a year or more. An airplane with the right instrumentation on it would cover it in five seconds.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> is serving as the base for ocean operations and is one of 12 research institutions hosting experiments in support of the mission.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In terms of platforming instrumentation, making sure the plane has the right equipment, working with the data when it comes back,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology Director <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gatescorallab.com\/\">Ruth Gates<\/a><\/strong>. &ldquo;What the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology does so well is provide the capacity on the ground to support this project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A project made possible by <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>, which is known more for its focus on space research and travel.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;People are really surprised to know that the majority of <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s portfolio, are in fact is Earth missions through satellite, through airborne, the whole gambit,&rdquo; said Michelle Gierach, the project scientist from <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\">Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Coral Reef Airborne Laboratory is to collect detailed data needed to better understand how coral reefs are being influenced by environmental factors.
