  {"id":45464,"date":"2016-04-28T14:51:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T00:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=45464"},"modified":"2019-01-31T14:24:11","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T00:24:11","slug":"uh-alumna-creates-sustainability-education-endowment-at-uh-hilo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/28\/uh-alumna-creates-sustainability-education-endowment-at-uh-hilo\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumna creates sustainability education endowment at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_45468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45468\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/hilo-donor-natsuyama-h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"333\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/hilo-donor-natsuyama-h.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/hilo-donor-natsuyama-h-234x260.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harriet Hatsune Natsuyama<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Harriet Hatsune Natsuyama<\/strong>, an alumna of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>, has established an endowment to support sustainable agriculture research at <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Natsuyama-Otsubo Family Initiative Fund will be used to support applied research activities in natural systems ecology, agroecology, sustainable agricultural production and island community food systems at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/cafnrm\/\">College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natsuyama also has committed 100 percent of the remainder of her charitable trust to establish the Natsuyama-Otsubo Family Initiative Endowment upon her passing.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The way I see it, this fund will be used toward innovating and developing initiatives on the Hilo campus,&rdquo; says Natsuyama. &ldquo;Hilo is the younger sister of the main <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus I attended during the 1950s when the university was 50 years old, 60 years ago! Now the university is twice as old. Hilo is in a unique position, ready to cast off as the leader in the environmental sciences.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Natsuyama says she would like the fund to be used to create a greener planet where humans live sustainably.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We humans must serve as stewards of the land, as protectors of the natural world,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;We need to learn to harvest only what we need of Earth&#8217;s resources and only in a conscious, fully responsible manner. By living in harmony with nature, there will be abundance for all. Natsuyama&#8217;s grandfather Sentaro Otsubo was a talented stonemason who worked on this historic landmark.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Natsuyama-Otsubo Family Initiative Endowment celebrates three generations of the Natsuyama-Otsubo family of Honolulu. The first generation consists of Sentaro Otsubo and Yone Narahara Otsubo, immigrants from Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, the nisei generation of Kenjiro Natsuyama and Yakue Natsuyama and two sansei (third generation) sons, Ernest Kenji Natsuyama and Eric Ben Natsuyama. <\/p>\n<p>The first two generations had limited schooling, and yet they encouraged the third generation to acquire a good education and contribute to society.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our family is important to us,&rdquo; says Natsuyama. &ldquo;The values our family hold are noble. The impact we make through our giving will be our legacy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More about Harriet Natsuyama<\/h2>\n<p>Harriet Natsuyama received her bachelor of arts in mathematics and her master of arts in physics from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. She received her doctor of science from Kyoto University Institute of astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p>She is an expert on systems analysis, computer modeling and applied mathematics. Her professional life took place in Southern California and as a visiting professor in Japanese universities.
