{"id":45400,"date":"2016-04-27T10:14:03","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T20:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=45400"},"modified":"2020-08-07T15:17:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T01:17:13","slug":"rare-shakespeare-exhibit-opens-at-kapiolani-community-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/27\/rare-shakespeare-exhibit-opens-at-kapiolani-community-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare Shakespeare exhibit opens at Kapi\u02bbolani Community College"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G-6rdbMp-cI?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Performances of <em>Hamlet<\/em> are some of many events scheduled around a very special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/shakespeare\/\">Shakespeare exhibit<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>, an opportunity to see a rare compilation of the bard&#8217;s works.<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred years after William Shakespeare&#8217;s death, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College is serving as the host site in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/shakespeare\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> for First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare<\/a>, a national traveling exhibition of one of the world&#8217;s most treasured books.<\/p>\n<p>Published seven years after his death in 1616, this rare volume was assembled from plays owned by actors and friends and printed in his memory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kapiolani-shakespeare-first-folio.jpg\" alt=\"Students viewing exhibit\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-45404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kapiolani-shakespeare-first-folio.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/kapiolani-shakespeare-first-folio-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of the 233 copies of the First Folio that survive today, 82 are in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folger.edu\/\">Folger Library<\/a> in Washington DC and one of those rare volumes is on display at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without that book, we would not have 18 of Shakespeare&#8217;s plays,&rdquo; said <strong>Mark Lawhorn<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> associate professor of English. &ldquo;They weren&#8217;t published. They were only first published in that First Folio.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Those 18 titles include beloved works such as <em>Macbeth<\/em>, <em>Julius Caesar<\/em> and <em>As You Like It<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit wowed <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Montana Toyama<\/strong>, &ldquo;The fact that something that old has maintained such great condition and that it&#8217;s available for everybody to see. That&#8217;s amazing,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Michell Sanchez<\/strong> agreed. &ldquo;It&#8217;s something that I think you should really come and experience,&rdquo; Sanchez said. &ldquo;It&#8217;s really interesting and broadens your horizons on the arts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The First Folio Exhibit runs through May 25th.
