  {"id":44885,"date":"2016-04-19T16:07:41","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T02:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=44885"},"modified":"2023-03-15T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T23:39:01","slug":"celebrating-malama-aina-at-honolulu-community-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/19\/celebrating-malama-aina-at-honolulu-community-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating m\u0101lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span> at Honolulu Community College"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4ahueOcX1Iw?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Five years after the start of <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>\u2019s Ka M\u0101la o Niuhelewai, the small garden is ringing with the sound of students pounding fresh poi with kalo grown right on site.<\/p>\n<p>Every April, the Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> community comes together for the college\u2019s Annual <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho\u02bbolaule\u02bba<\/span> to celebrate the bounty of the garden and to help raise awareness about Hawaiian culture and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-45026\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/honolulu-dry-kalo.jpg\" alt=\"Dry kalo\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/honolulu-dry-kalo.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/honolulu-dry-kalo-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the garden is to promote food security in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>, to supplement our food and to create more awareness for the young ones,\u201d said <strong>Mark Alapaki Luke<\/strong>, chair of Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Hawaiian studies program. \u201cWe also promote organic growing as well as sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The garden was established in 2011 and is maintained by students, faculty, staff and community members. Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Annual <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho\u02bbolaule\u02bba<\/span> includes a wide range of activities from poi pounding, weaving, to preparing food in the imu, or underground oven.<\/p>\n<h2>An outdoor classroom<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cPeople who come out to our little m\u0101la back here, they take away learning about how Hawaiians lived and how they grew their food,\u201d said Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Vicky Desantos<\/strong>. \u201cWhen we grow our kalo in the ground, we\u2019re actually sustaining ourselves by eating the food that we grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45005\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/honolulu-hoolaulea-weaving.jpg\" alt=\"Weaving with palm leaves\" width=\"250\" height=\"212\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Following sustainable practices, people got a chance to weave their own food plates out of palm leaves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a program that\u2019s collaborated with other programs, carpentry, welding, liberal arts, and we all work together to promote m\u0101lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span>,\u201d added Luke.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as an outdoor classroom, the garden includes 20 varieties of dry land kalo. Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> has also partnered with schools and community organizations to help educate the public about sustainability and taking care of the land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that being here at the school as a student that we are like a little hidden gem, and we invite everyone to come out and learn,\u201d said Desantos.<\/p>\n<p>Added Luke, \u201cThe k\u016bpuna from this <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span>, the ancestors, they are really reaching out to everybody else as well and teaching us.
