The $17-million project involved partial demolition and renovations to the Pier 35 building. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/UMC\/cms\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Marine Center<\/a> will relocate from its current location at Pier 45 of Honolulu Harbor by summer 2016. The move is part of the Department of Transportation\u2019s Harbors Modernization Plan to increase container terminal space at the state\u2019s busiest commercial harbor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44401\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44401\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-soest-pier-35.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-soest-pier-35.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-soest-pier-35-260x111.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pier 35<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> operates two major research vessels, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/UMC\/cms\/kilo-moana\/\"><abbr title=\"Research Vessel\">R\/V<\/abbr> <em>Kilomoana<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/UMC\/cms\/kaimikai-o-kanaloa\/\"><abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> <em><span aria-label=\"Kaimikai-O-Kanaloa\">Ka\u02bbimikai-O-Kanaloa<\/span><\/em><\/a>, as well as several small boats, manned submersibles, remotely operated, autonomous and towed underwater vehicles and ocean gliders. Many of the research cruises and marine operations are done in collaboration with other specialized research groups and programs at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a new page in the centennial history of marine science at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>,\u201d said <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/about\/directory\/brian-taylor\/\"><strong>Brian Taylor<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a great day with a new facility, new building and a renovated pier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> brings in about $100 million in federal and international research grants a year, of which about $10 million is used to operate the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> research ships. <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> also employs about 1,000 workers through its various programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarine science is one of our core education and research programs,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cWe\u2019re ranked in the top 15 in the world in ocean and earth and atmospheric sciences.
