  {"id":44350,"date":"2016-03-30T11:38:15","date_gmt":"2016-03-30T21:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=44350"},"modified":"2020-01-16T15:00:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T01:00:09","slug":"governor-david-ige-welcomed-at-uh-west-oahu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/03\/30\/governor-david-ige-welcomed-at-uh-west-oahu\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor David Ige welcomed at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DQqGAyIyiKc?rel=0&#038;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/\">David Ige<\/a> and First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige toured the <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> campus on Tuesday, March 29, and spent some time getting to know the university&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/bachelor-of-arts-in-humanities\/creative-media\/\">creative media program<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/uluulu.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span> moving image archive<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees-and-certificates\/certificates\/#forensic\">forensic anthropology program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/west-oahu-ige-anthro.jpg\" alt=\"Ige with student\" width=\"250\" height=\"305\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-44377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/west-oahu-ige-anthro.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/west-oahu-ige-anthro-213x260.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They were welcomed with an oli by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student services and PIKO Project faculty and staff, followed by a presentation by Interim Chancellor <strong>Doris Ching<\/strong> about <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student enrollment and academic programs including the bachelor&#8217;s degree in humanities and bachelor&#8217;s degree in applied science with a concentration in creative media.<\/p>\n<p><p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Academy for Creative Media System Director <strong>Chris Lee<\/strong> provided a first-hand glimpse of the university&#8217;s creative media program and discussed how <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> is the hub for University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students pursuing creative media bachelor&#8217;s degrees. The university has articulation agreements with all seven <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Creative media is one of the fastest growing programs at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> thanks in part to a generous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/roy-and-hilda-takeyama-donate-100000-uh-academy-creative-media\">$1 million donation<\/a> from the Roy and Hilda Takeyama Foundation. The gift is used for tuition, books, fees, travel, computer hardware and software, student internships and student scholarships. It will also be used to outfit the anticipated Academy for Creative Media building with state-of-the-art equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The governor and first lady were treated to a 3D graphic display on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Cyber<abbr>CANOE<\/abbr> (Collaborative Analytics Navigation and Observation Environment) that is used to carry picture and sound between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> classrooms so students on different campuses may see each other and work together sharing rich media and information. They also toured the <span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span>, Henry K.
