When he immigrated to the United States and settled in Honolulu, he tried to fit into the new culture but ultimately felt that he was outside of it. Soon, he became fascinated with PEZ candy and dispensers.

“I found this material interesting because its form reminded me of the buildings of Hong Kong,” said Lam. He collected the PEZ dispensers and candy and began using them as a way to anchor himself and to make sense of his new surroundings and culture. PEZ candy has become his personal material that he uses to create metaphors for his life-changing experience of immigrating to a foreign land.

Lam’s recent group exhibitions include Hybrid Forms and Interdisciplinary Practice in Chicago, 2015 and Fiber Â鶹´«Ã½, 2014.

Exhibit information

“Waikīkī Parc features Percy Lam” from April 7 through June 24 in the Parc Promenade Gallery at the Waikīkī Parc Hotel.
