  {"id":44228,"date":"2016-03-28T10:00:22","date_gmt":"2016-03-28T20:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=44228"},"modified":"2018-10-25T15:17:49","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T01:17:49","slug":"ktuh-has-new-frequency-and-island-wide-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/03\/28\/ktuh-has-new-frequency-and-island-wide-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"radio call letters K T U H\">KTUH<\/abbr> has new frequency and island-wide coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_44230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44230\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-ktuh-new-frequency.jpg\" alt=\"map of Oahu\" width=\"620\" height=\"448\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-ktuh-new-frequency.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/manoa-ktuh-new-frequency-260x188.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">90.1 <abbr title=\"Frequency Modulation\">FM<\/abbr> coverage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ktuh.org\/\"><abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> <abbr>FM<\/abbr> Honolulu<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>&#8217;s radio station, began broadcasting island-wide at its new frequency 90.1 <abbr>FM<\/abbr> with 7,000 watts on March 19.<\/p>\n<p>The frequency switch was commemorated with an hour of Hawaiian music. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> now broadcasts at 90.1 <abbr>FM<\/abbr> in Honolulu and throughout the island; 91.1 <abbr>FM<\/abbr> remains to serve pockets on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s North Shore.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> boosts reach<\/h2>\n<p>The student-run radio station hit the airwaves in 1969 as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s first <abbr>FM<\/abbr>-licensed, public\/non-commercial radio station. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> added a North Shore translator and then increased its wattage from 100 to 3,000 watts in 2001, which extended M&#257;noa&#8217;s coverage to Waipahu and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Kai.<\/p>\n<p>Striving to expand further, <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> began planning this current project in 2006. Fundraising started in 2009 and continued through the 2015 <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> Pledge Drive last Spring, which secured the remaining finances. These funds allowed the station to move its antenna from the top of Saunders Hall on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus to the top of Tantalus, a colocation with <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiipublicradio.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Public Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new antenna comes with a new transmitter that boosts the station&#8217;s wattage from 3,000 to 7,000 watts; allowing <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> to be heard island-wide at the new 90.1 frequency. The 91.1 <abbr>FM<\/abbr> translator frequency will remain to serve pockets on the North Shore.
