{"id":44021,"date":"2016-03-20T08:30:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T18:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=44021"},"modified":"2019-01-03T15:38:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T01:38:22","slug":"dual-credit-courses-aim-to-improve-student-post-secondary-success-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/03\/20\/dual-credit-courses-aim-to-improve-student-post-secondary-success-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Dual credit courses aim to improve student post-secondary success rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jVZ2LoRp1og?rel=0&#038;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>For more than a decade now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/campus_education\/campuses\/maui_campus\/\">Kamehameha Schools Maui<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Maui College<\/a> have partnered to offer early college, dual-credit courses to <abbr title=\"Kamehameha Schools\">KS<\/abbr> Maui students.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and Kamehameha Schools formalized a new partnership, known as Hui <span aria-label=\"Hoopili Aina\">Ho&#699;opili &#699;&#256;ina<\/span>, aimed at improving Native Hawaiian student success while creating a sustainable <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. But the two educational institutions have been collaborating for years on many fronts, including the early college program at <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/16\/paths-to-native-hawaiian-success-identified-in-kamehameha-partnership\/\">Paths to Native Hawaiian success identified in new Kamehameha partnership, <\/a> September 16, 2015 <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/09\/kamehameha-schools-and-uh-partner-to-increase-educational-success-of-native-hawaiians\/\">Kamehameha Schools and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> partner to increase educational success of Native Hawaiians,<\/a> September 9, 2015 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted to start this culture early-on, of creating a college mindset,&rdquo; said Jay-R <span aria-label=\"Kaawa\">Ka&#699;awa<\/abbr>, <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui academies principal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s really paid off for our families financially by having our students get a head start on a college career while they are in high school.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44066\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ks-uh-parntership-ks-maui-student.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ks-uh-parntership-ks-maui-student.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ks-uh-parntership-ks-maui-student-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamehameha Schools Maui senior Richard Renaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through the partnership, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College instructors teach college-level classes on the <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui campus, allowing students to earn both high school and college credits.<\/p>\n<p>From 2005 till 2016, more than 500 <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui students have taken these courses, earning more than 3,370 college credits in a wide range of subjects from math and science to history and English. Students get to experience courses like English 100, Calculus 205 and 206, Statistics 115, Psychology 100 and Sociology 100.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it&#8217;s really crucial and you get that big step in college and it just gives you that boost,&rdquo; said <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui senior Richard Renaud.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s good to know what college classes are like so you can prepare for it. I got to mentally prepare for college and these dual credits are definitely going to help.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Setting students up for success<\/h2>\n<p>National research reinforces that high school students who take early college classes are more successful when they transition to college. Early college also lowers the cost of higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They&#8217;re more likely to enroll in a college, they&#8217;re more likely to be successful in college, they are more likely to persist and they are more likely to complete a degree,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/admin\/chancellors\/maui.html\"><strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through surveys <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Maui has conducted with alumni who have gone through the early college program, that thinking has been validated. Alumni have indicated how they are better prepared for the college transition and are acclimated to the rigor of a college course, even though they were still in high school.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>KS<\/abbr> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> are now expanding the early college program to <abbr>KS<\/abbr> Kap&#257;lama and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> campus students.
