Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Community College\u2013P\u0101lamanui<\/a> hosted events on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27 that celebrated the opening of the new campus in West Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The college conducted a Moku Ka Piko ceremony on Friday to bless the campus.<\/p>\n

Moku Ka Piko ceremony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Moku Ka Piko is a traditional ceremony that blesses and dedicates a newly constructed home. It literally means \u201cto sever the umbilical cord\u201d as the opening of a new home is likened to the birth of a child. The ceremony acknowledged Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>\u2013P\u0101lamanui as the new home for higher education in West Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Speakers at the event included Governor David Ige, UH<\/abbr> System President David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>, UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton<\/strong><\/a>, Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> CC<\/abbr> Interim Chancellor Joni Onishi<\/strong>, Director of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Community College-P\u0101lamanui and University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Center, West Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Marty Fletcher<\/strong> and Ku\u02bbulei<\/span> Ke\u0101kealani.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to congratulate all those who worked so hard for many years to bring this campus to fruition and I am so proud to be able to serve as your governor when we have this ceremony launching the birthing of this new campus,\u201d said Ige. \u201cCongratulations to all, congratulations to the community for making this center a true community center for higher learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Open house and grand opening<\/h2>\n

On Saturday, hundreds of community members visited the campus for the Open House and Grand Opening Celebration.<\/p>\n

Visitors enjoyed live music from Grammy-nominated musician Robi Kahakalau, The Keawe Trio and Hilo-based reggae band The Steppas. Polynesian cultural group Ta \u02bbE\u02bba<\/span> o Te Turama also performed.<\/p>\n

Many interactive exhibits were presented by Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>\u2013P\u0101lamanui programs and other University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> campuses and community groups. This included food samples and cooking demonstrations by the Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>\u2013P\u0101lamanui culinary arts program.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so impressed with this beautiful campus, and I\u2019ve been here since Kona didn\u2019t have any of this,\u201d said longtime Kona resident Jean Yokoyama-McDonald, who attended Saturday\u2019s event. \u201cI\u2019m so proud of Kona for making this come to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fletcher added, \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly exciting to see so many community members enjoying themselves at the new campus. They\u2019ve waited a long time for these facilities, and we are thrilled they came out to celebrate and learn about the higher education options in their community.\u201d<\/p>\n
