Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> Death is a virulent disease that has killed more than 100,000 <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> trees on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n<p>The honorees were Extension Forester <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/nrem\/staff\/friday.html\">J.B. Friday<\/a><\/strong> of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/site\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>), Flint Hughes of the <abbr title=\"United States Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr> Forest Service Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry and Lisa Keith of them <abbr>USDA<\/abbr> Agricultural Research Service Pacific Basin Agriculture Research Center.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThrough their work, the cause and possible transmission vectors have been identified, the locations of infected trees have been mapped and preventatives, treatments, genetic resistance, possible insect vectors and many other aspects are being tested in an effort to save the <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> Their proposal to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Agriculture to quarantine <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> wood moving off the Big Island has led to the prevention of infected logs being shipped to other islands. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RapidOhiaDeath\">source<\/a>]<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/forestry\/disease\/ohia_wilt.html\">Learn more about the work being done.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Outreach and next steps against Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> Death<\/h2>\n<p>Time is of the essence when it comes to preventing the spread of Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> Death through community and professional outreach.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of our next steps is get crews of people from other islands over here to do on-the-ground training, so they know what to look for,&rdquo; Friday explains. He is reaching out to colleagues at the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Association of Watershed Partnerships and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Invasive Species committees on each island. &ldquo;They are the eyes on the ground.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He notes that other <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> researches are taking a close look at the role of insects in the spread of Rapid <span aria-label=\"Ohia\">&#699;&#332;hi&#699;a<\/span> death, and is very supporting of the <span aria-label=\"ohia\">&#699;&#333;hi&#699;a<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/ohialove\">seed-banking campaign<\/a> currently underway at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/lyonarboretum\/\">Lyon Arboretum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it&#8217;s great what they&#8217;re doing at Lyon Arboretum, banking the seeds.
