{"id":43282,"date":"2016-04-05T07:46:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T17:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=43282"},"modified":"2020-08-07T15:18:04","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T01:18:04","slug":"uh-managed-pacific-disaster-center-aids-fight-against-zika","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/05\/uh-managed-pacific-disaster-center-aids-fight-against-zika\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> managed Pacific Disaster Center aids fight against Zika"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GQ_VT3j4On8?rel=0&#038;showinfo=0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Zika virus is one of the latest threats the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> managed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdc.org\/\">Pacific Disaster Center<\/a> (<abbr>PDC<\/abbr>) is helping to combat with its global array of technological solutions and services.<\/p>\n<p>The center has been monitoring and mapping outbreaks and providing regular products to the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> government as well as international agencies involved in the strategic response to the mosquito born disease. <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>&#8217;s DisasterAWARE platform includes not only easy visualization and integration of environmental and health data, but it&#8217;s also equipped with thousands of national and subnational infrastructure data, such as hospitals and airports, and observational data, such as accumulated rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> was recently awarded a 5-year cooperative agreement by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defense.gov\/\"><abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Defense<\/a> to continue to serve as managing partner of the Pacific Disaster Center on Maui.<\/p>\n<h2>Helping <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the world<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr> delivers comprehensive disaster risk reduction solutions&#8212;including risk and vulnerability assessment and innovative tools and services&#8212;to disaster managers and the public to help avoid hazards becoming disasters and disasters becoming crises. The center&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdc.org\/solutions\/products\/disasteraware\/\">DisasterAWARE<\/a> software product is regularly used by primary disaster management agencies in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, by <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> federal agencies such as the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and state, as well as by disaster management  agencies in countries around the globe, and even by the United Nations. Customized versions of DisasterAWARE have also been delivered to agencies in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Association of South East Asian Nations.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr> Executive Director <strong>Ray Shirkhodai<\/strong> said, &ldquo;This vote of confidence by the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> government in our work is a testament to the success of our entire team in advancing our mission. The capabilities of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii\">RCUH<\/abbr> have enabled us to meet the unique needs of our stakeholders and customers in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, throughout the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr>, among nations in Asia and beyond.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Over the past nine years <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> has substantially increased its project funding beyond the base cooperative agreement, now matching its base funding each year through entrepreneurial business development with public and private partners in the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> and internationally. <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> has also expanded its services to include a new mobile application, Disaster Alert for Android and <abbr title=\"iPhone Operating System\">iOS<\/abbr>, which has been downloaded more than 1.6 million times and is recognized globally as one of the premiere mobile apps for disaster information and management. <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>&#8217;s Global Hazards Atlas, a publicly available interactive map for hazard monitoring and early warnings, is another popular tool.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>PDC<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> has served as managing partner for <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> since 2006, when it was first selected through a competitive process to assume management responsibility. The agreement was again awarded to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> in 2009 for six years, and was renewed in 2015 for an additional five years. Additionally, based on the success of the program the new cooperative agreement was expanded from the base agreement of about $30 million to include a ceiling of $75 million for the performance period.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr> principal investigator, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/op\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>, noted, &ldquo;This is a compelling example of how <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is helping <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the world. <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> offers some of the best high tech jobs on Maui, many of which go to our own student interns when they graduate.
