{"id":43189,"date":"2016-02-24T08:47:02","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T18:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=43189"},"modified":"2018-11-29T13:14:08","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T23:14:08","slug":"proposed-modest-tuition-increases-to-fund-needed-maintenance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/24\/proposed-modest-tuition-increases-to-fund-needed-maintenance\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed modest tuition increases to fund needed maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>Tuition increases of 2 percent or less over the next three years are being proposed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> for public discussion to address the $500 million systemwide deferred maintenance backlog that has developed over past decades and institute best practices to prevent its recurrence.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed schedule covers the period from the 2017&#8211;18 through the 2019&#8211;20 academic years with annual increases ranging from zero to 2 percent across the 10 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> campuses in each year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa will use tuition increases to begin a multi-year plan to eliminate its deferred maintenance backlog using revenue bonds. <\/li>\n<li>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges will use the tuition increases to eliminate their current deferred maintenance backlog using revenue bonds. <\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will use tuition increases to establish sinking funds for capital renewal and maintenance, consistent with national best practices, to prevent backlogs from occurring. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following discussion by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">Board of Regents<\/a>, the proposal will be vetted during a series of  public meetings statewide.
