This year&#8217;s honorees also included a zoology specialist, a copper artist, a volunteer and a master of Hawaiian language.<\/p>\n<h2>About Dennis Masao Ogawa<\/h2>\n<p>Born in Manzanar, California, Ogawa received his <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucla.edu\/\">University of California, Los Angeles<\/a> in 1969, where he was honored as one of the founders of the university&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aasc.ucla.edu\/\">Asian American Studies Center<\/a>. That same year, he joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/\">American studies department<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa, where he pioneered the first courses on Japanese Americans.
