The Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> AgDiscovery Program, July 10\u201323, 2016, is now open for applications from students 14 to 17 years old. This unique, free summer program, hosted for the sixth year by UH<\/abbr> Manoa\u2019s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, gives its teenage participants a first-hand look at the many career paths open to them in agriculture and natural resource management, including plant and animal sciences, wildlife management and agribusiness.<\/p>\n

Every summer, USDA<\/abbr>\u2019s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS<\/abbr>) partners with selected universities and colleges to deliver the AgDiscovery programs at different locations throughout the country. Students live on a college campus and learn about agriculture and related fields from professors, scientists and professionals.<\/p>\n

CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s educators and researchers open their labs and experiment stations to the students and APHIS<\/abbr> sends professionals from its plant protection and quarantine, veterinary services, biotechnology regulatory services and wildlife services branches. Other government agencies represented include the Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Department of Agriculture and the Honolulu Zoo. From the private sector come professionals from Kualoa Ranch, Mari\u2019s Garden, Pioneer, and more.<\/p>\n

Educational and exciting<\/h2>\n

Students chosen to participate in Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> AgDiscovery Program will gain life-changing experiences through hands-on laboratories, workshops, field trips and character- and team-building activities.<\/p>\n

Students in past years have learned to perform water-quality analysis, use GPS<\/abbr> devices, identify microorganisms under the microscope, extract DNA<\/abbr>, color fabric using natural dyes and tend to taro in the lo\u02bbi<\/span>. In addition to learning by doing, participants get to network with professionals across the agricultural spectrum and observe careers in agriculture and natural resource management.<\/p>\n
