The National Cyber League was first run in 2011 with a vision to &ldquo;provide an ongoing virtual training group for collegiate students to develop, practice and validate their cybersecurity skills using next-generation high-fidelity simulation environments.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CENT<\/abbr> Professor <strong>Aaron Tanaka<\/strong> used the National Cyber League competition to enhance an ethical hacking course. Three teams were formed using students from this class, along with three additional students who competed in the 2014 National Cyber League.<\/p>\n<p>The three teams were Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CENT<\/abbr>, Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>-HATS and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>-Makai. All three teams performed well, with Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CENT<\/abbr> placing fourth in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CENT<\/abbr> team are team captain, <strong>Jayson Hayworth<\/strong>, <strong>Taylor Kina<\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Ryan<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Kotake<\/strong>, <strong>Ahloy Chang<\/strong>, <strong>Derrick Le<\/strong> and <strong>Nathn Fiesta<\/strong>. The team captains for the other two teams are <strong>Gerome Catbagan<\/strong> (Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>-HATS), and <strong>Chance Kawasaki<\/strong> (Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>-Makai).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42294\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/honolulu-cent-ncl-full-group.jpg\" alt=\"CENT students\" width=\"620\" height=\"282\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/honolulu-cent-ncl-full-group.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/honolulu-cent-ncl-full-group-260x118.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><abbr>CENT<\/abbr>&#8217;s National Cyber League competition teams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CENT<\/abbr> team captain Hayworth provided a student reflection of his experience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The strongest impact this challenge had on the teams was the ability to demonstrate how effective working together can be,&rdquo; said Hayworth. &ldquo;It became extremely obvious how quickly we were able to blow through challenges when we were able to work in pairs and apply multiple minds to the same problem.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The entire challenge was a huge roller coaster ride for our team,&rdquo; continued Hayworth. &ldquo;It was an absolutely amazing experience that had us go from being absolutely ecstatic and screaming in the middle of the night to being completely lost and dazed in a mirage of bits and bytes.
