{"id":41458,"date":"2015-12-22T08:04:48","date_gmt":"2015-12-22T18:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=41458"},"modified":"2021-06-09T14:25:03","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T00:25:03","slug":"ncaa-issues-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/12\/22\/ncaa-issues-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> responds to men\u2019s basketball program <abbr title=\"National Collegiate Athletic Association\">NCAA<\/abbr> sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/grW4edigMu8\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> accepts the sanctions announced today by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/\">National Collegiate Athletic Association<\/a> (<abbr>NCAA<\/abbr>) in its investigation into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiathletics.com\/index.aspx?path=mbball\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> men&#8217;s basketball team<\/a> under former head coach Gib Arnold. Though the university is disappointed with the extent of the punishment, particularly the post-season ban and its impact to the student-athletes, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> acknowledges that mistakes were made and offers no excuses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is time move on from this unfortunate chapter in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> athletics history,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Athletics Director <strong>David Matlin<\/strong>. &ldquo;It is important for us to show our commitment to the highest levels of integrity and competence and most importantly, this is an example we need to set for our student athletes and that&#8217;s winning with integrity. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>NCAA<\/abbr> investigation began with <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s discovery and prompt self-reporting of a violation involving a then assistant men&#8217;s basketball coach. From the outset of the investigation, the university worked closely with the enforcement staff and has cooperated fully.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> has also already taken steps to further empower and support the compliance staff including:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>adding a compliance staff position that focuses on rules education,<\/li>\n<li>increasing the compliance team&#8217;s attendance at practice, <\/li>\n<li>increasing booster education, including running ads in the newspaper and mailing an education flier out with season tickets, and<\/li>\n<li>increasing student athlete awareness and education, with meetings regarding the <abbr>NCAA<\/abbr> compliance rules at the start and end of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41487\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/manoa-athletics-matlin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/manoa-athletics-matlin.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/manoa-athletics-matlin-260x147.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Athletic Director David Matlin at December 22 news conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">&ldquo;I am confident that we have the right leaders in place to ensure that our athletics programs are run with the highest level of integrity,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>. &ldquo;David Matlin has made great strides in this area with his recent head coach hires of <strong>Eran Ganot<\/strong> and <strong>Nick Rolovich<\/strong>. Both of these coaches exhibit the character and integrity that we expect of our student-athletes.
