The crew of Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a> H\u014dk\u016bleʻa<\/span> has reached the climax of the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage’s<\/a> most ambitious leg—the final stop on the South African leg of her historic journey. South Africa marks the halfway point of the Worldwide Voyage and the furthest point from Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> for H\u014dk\u016bleʻa<\/span> and her crew. H\u014dk\u016bleʻa<\/span> arrived into Cape Town on Thursday, November 12. <\/p>\n

Three members of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> ʻohana<\/span> are participating in the South Africa leg of the World Wide Voyage. They are Chad Kalepa Baybayan<\/strong>, navigator-in-residence for the ʻImiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center<\/a> at UH<\/abbr> Hilo; Linda Furuto<\/strong>, associate professor of curriculum studies at UH<\/abbr> Mānoa and Honolulu Community College Associate Professor and Director of Marine Maintenance and Repair Robert Perkins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The H\u014dk\u016bleʻa<\/span> and her crew are expected to spend one week in Cape Town. They will be joined by a 60 person delegation of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> educators, students and families. Together, they will support the Mālama Honua mission of the voyage by engaging with the local community through various activities to be held throughout the week including a ceremony of friendship, a service project at Table Mountain National Park, a cultural exchange and a surf session with The Surfer Kids, canoe tours, school visits and more. <\/p>\n

The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is an education partner in H\u014dk\u016bleʻa<\/span>’s Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage. More than 50 University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> faculty, staff and students from UH<\/abbr> Mānoa<\/a>, UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>, UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a>, Honolulu Community College<\/a>, Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College<\/a>, Leeward Community College<\/a>, Windward Community College<\/a>, Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College and UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> are actively participating in the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage.<\/p>\n
