{"id":40352,"date":"2015-11-10T10:11:45","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T20:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=40352"},"modified":"2021-06-24T14:33:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T00:33:21","slug":"educational-experience-of-veterans-honored-alongside-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/11\/10\/educational-experience-of-veterans-honored-alongside-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Educational experience of veterans honored alongside service"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L4-U-cfHxdE\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/home\">School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene<\/a> honored military veterans with a Veterans Day Celebration on November 9, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony included a presentation of colors by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/armyrotc\/colorGuard.html\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Army <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> Color Guard<\/a> and a moment of silence to remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, herself a veteran, was the keynote speaker.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m really pleased to see the cadets here today, representing a generation through their own example of having chosen service,&rdquo; Gabbard said.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s nursing school is doing its part to honor and assist veterans after recently receiving federal Health Resources and Services Administration funding for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursing.hawaii.edu\/vetstonurses\">Vets-to-Nursing Program<\/a>. The school will provide college credits for a veteran&#8217;s past medical experience, creating a quick pathway to professional nursing and employment for service members with skills and experience in healthcare.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/gp\/uhmanoa\/b6fr34\">Photos from the ceremony<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/10\/05\/nursing-course-credit-available-for-veterans-with-military-medical-training\/\">&ldquo;Nursing course credit available for veterans with military medical training,&rdquo;<\/a> October 5, 2015 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It not only empowers the veterans to be able to continue their profession, to be able to continue their service,&rdquo; said Gabbard. &ldquo;But it also helps I think people within our community at large to learn more about, you know, what their lives have been like and what their service has been like.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Programs like this mean a lot to veterans pursuing their higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It doesn&#8217;t feel like the nine years I did in military is wasted,&rdquo; said Chase Haygood, a M&#257;noa nursing student. &ldquo;It feels like, okay, somebody else recognizes, besides the military, what I have done and what I have been through.
