{"id":40126,"date":"2015-11-03T16:20:58","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T02:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=40126"},"modified":"2021-06-25T09:54:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T19:54:13","slug":"uh-manoa-graduation-rates-show-steady-improvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/11\/03\/uh-manoa-graduation-rates-show-steady-improvement\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduation rates show steady improvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/30F3_ZLKxHE\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> multifaceted campus-wide initiative to develop and implement a cohesive student academic support structure has resulted in unprecedented sustained, multiyear increases in graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These improvements are a result of enacting a strategic priority of building a M&#257;noa community in support of student success,&rdquo; said University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>. &ldquo;The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ovcaa\/\">Office of the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs<\/a> should be commended for leading with a clear vision and in a manner that was inclusive of students and employees at all levels of the university.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From 2010 to 2015 our six-year rate has increased from 48.6 percent to 57.1 percent while the four-year rate has increased from 17.5 percent to 27.9 percent, a remarkable accomplishment. In fact, in just this year alone the six-year rate increased by .9 percent, while the four-year rate jumped by 3.2 percent,&rdquo; added Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs <strong>Reed Dasenbrock<\/strong>. &ldquo;The improvement in graduation rates is a significant achievement due to the passionate, collaborative effort of many. The entire campus should celebrate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa has moved purposefully in terms of organizing and staffing, policy and technology to improve historically low graduation rates. The initiative has had three core components that integrate and better utilize &ldquo;high-tech&rdquo; and &ldquo;high-touch&rdquo; academic support delivery, in combination with a four-year degree plan or &ldquo;student roadmap.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>High-Tech<\/h2>\n<p><em>Improve assessment capacity:<\/em> The STAR (Student Academic Requirements) degree audit system was implemented. STAR is a user-friendly tool that produces individualized reports that reflect a student&#8217;s academic progress toward a specific degree and helps enhance and streamline advising.<\/p>\n<h2>High-Touch<\/h2>\n<p><em>Increase student access to academic advisors:<\/em> Mandatory advising during a student&rsquo;s first two years improves the student&#8217;s understanding and appreciation for advising, by engaging them in academic planning, and to ensure that regular communication is maintained with their respective colleges and schools.
