Rocket goes up skyward and disappears into the clouds. #ORS4 #SuperStrypi #spacelaunch #rocketscience @UHManoaNews @HonoluluCC @KauaiCC<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\" color:#c9c8cd; font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; line-height:17px; margin-bottom:0; margin-top:8px; overflow:hidden; padding:8px 0 7px; text-align:center; text-overflow:ellipsis; white-space:nowrap;\">A video posted by University of Hawaii System (@uhawaiinews) on <time style=\" font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; line-height:17px;\" datetime=\"2015-11-04T03:45:44+00:00\">Nov 3, 2015 at 7:45pm PST<\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async defer src=\"\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: The original story was updated to reflect launch vehicle anomaly <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Navy along with the U.S. Air Force&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ors.csd.disa.mil\/\">Operationally Responsive Space Office<\/a>, in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandia.gov\/\">Sandia National Laboratories<\/a>, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsfl.hawaii.edu\/wordpress\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnic.navy.mil\/regions\/cnrh\/installations\/pacific_missile_range_facility_barking_sands.html\">Pacific Missile Range Facility<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocket.com\/\">Aerojet Rocketdyne Corp.<\/a> launched the first rocket from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>After take-off, the experimental launch vehicle experienced an anomaly. <abbr title=\"Opreationally Responsive Space Office\">ORS<\/abbr> is currently assessing the cause.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket was launched from the U.S. Navy&#8217;s Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, through a mission known as <abbr>ORS<\/abbr>-4. The mission was sponsored by the Space and Missile Systems Center&#8217;s Operationally Responsive Space Office and was the first launch of the Super Strypi launch system. The rocket was carrying <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s hyperspectral imager as the primary payload, along with 12 cubesats in an integrated payload stack.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the vehicle issue, the project is still a tremendous success for University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. About 150 students worked on the payload, a hyperspectral imager called HiakaSat. All milestones for the payload were met and the students received real-world aerospace experience in building a sophisticated satellite.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this project, there is now a rocket launch pad and rail launcher in place at Pacific Missle Range Facility and those assets performed well today. There are also tracking stations in place at <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> that are fielding requests for services from commercial agencies.
