{"id":3978,"date":"2012-02-08T07:59:13","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T17:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=3978"},"modified":"2021-05-06T14:40:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T00:40:21","slug":"sustainable-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/02\/08\/sustainable-living\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable living gets a boost from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_3993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3993\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi2.jpg\" alt=\"3 men looking at steel container\" title=\" \" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi2-260x174.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Trujillo, center, shows <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Regents Ram\u00f3n de la Pe\u00f1a, left, and John Holzman honey produced by <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> beehives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> has launched <span aria-label=\"Hoouluwehi\">Ho&#699;ouluwehi<\/span>: The Sustainable Living Institute of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> to partner with the community in creating a culturally, economically, environmentally and socially sustainable Garden Island.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an exciting moment for the college,&rdquo; said Chancellor <strong>Helen Cox<\/strong>. &ldquo;It is both the culmination of intense  work since 2009 and the beginning of a remarkable journey in which we will provide our students opportunities to engage in exciting work in many aspects of sustainability while at the same time provide very real solutions for the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Working with Hawaiian and local cultural values, the institute will advance partnerships and implement research and projects to foster a more vibrant future for <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Institute objectives include&#8212;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assisting the college in reducing its own environmental footprint<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating sustainable practices available today as well as conducting applied research on promising technologies and practices<\/li>\n<li>Providing a training center for green workers, entrepreneurs and interested residents<\/li>\n<li>Establishing <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> as a place for tough discussions and helpful resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3994\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\" \" width=\"400\" height=\"340\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/hoouluwehi3-260x221.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chancellor Helen Cox with institute Director Eric Knutzen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;For each of us in the community, the institute can be seen as building upon our history and, in a very practical way, positively affecting everyone on the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> in the long term,&rdquo; said <strong>Eric Knutzen<\/strong>, institute director. &ldquo;Areas of special focus include sustainable living practices in producing food, renewable energy, affordable housing and waste elimination.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The institute will build upon the campus&#8217;s current sustainable programs, including a community garden and the Farm-to-Table project in which students create gourmet dishes from produce straight from the garden.<\/p>\n<p> Students also work with aquaponics, queen bees cultivation and renewable energy programs.<\/p>\n<p>The campus has also allocated land to build two affordable home prototypes that will be open to the public for viewing when completed and will serve as prototypes for developers. &ldquo;Free online access to the design plans and material purchase lists as well as budgets will be made available.
