Greenwood<\/strong> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> spoke at a ceremony held Friday at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa to celebrate the groundbreaking for the center.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This center will provide the foundation for our mission-focused efforts and move us a giant step forward in our quest to be a model 21st-century university with excellent facilities,&rdquo; said Greenwood.<\/p>\n<h2>Building features<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4027\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4027\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.exterior.jpg\" alt=\"artist rendering of 6-story glass and metal building\" title=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.exterior.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.exterior-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist&#8217;s rendering of the new center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Located immediately east of Bilger Addition, the Information Technology Center will provide a centralized facility for the university&#8217;s systemwide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/its\">Information Technology Services<\/a> division. It will house a state-of-the-art and energy-efficient data center featuring an 8,000-square-foot machine room for enterprise servers, storage and communications.<\/p>\n<p>It will also be the site for the university&#8217;s first emergency situation room, which will provide space with available power and communications suitable for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> administrators and emergency personnel to manage disasters and other crisis situations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> learned many lessons from the 2004 flood that caused extensive damage to the M&#257;noa campus and threatened our main data center, which provides Internet access for all <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses statewide and our state government offices, including <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Civil Defense. It&#8217;s those lessons and our goal to provide a quality learning and research environment for our students, faculty and staff that have inspired this building,&rdquo; said Greenwood.<\/p>\n<p>The center will also include meeting and training rooms, the university&#8217;s information technology Help Desk, modern workspace for <abbr title=\"Information Technology Services\">ITS<\/abbr> staff, facilities for faculty to develop and produce engaging digital media content for education and research and advanced teleconferencing and collaboration environments for members of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community to work with colleagues and peers around the world.<\/p>\n<h2>Green design<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4043\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.interior.reception.jpg\" alt=\"artist drawing of people in hallway by reception desk\" title=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.interior.reception.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/it.interior.reception-260x159.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist&#039;s rendering of reception area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The building will be designed to support <abbr class=\"helpcursor\" title=\"Leadership in Energy and Efficiency Design\">LEED<\/abbr> certification, which is considered rare for a building with a data center.
