The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> celebrates the richness of Filipino heritage and culture during Filipino American Heritage Month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Filipino American Heritage Month is a time when we celebrate the diversity of our heritage and the richness of our culture as Filipinos,” says Norman Arancon<\/strong>, associate professor of horticulture and an organizer of the month’s events. “It is also the time when we recognize several Filipinos in the past who paved the way for many others—the path to making it into the United States, the land of opportunities. Many of them held important positions in the community and the government and were responsible for recognizing the contributions of Filipinos in the economy and education.”<\/p>\n

  • October 7, 5:30 p.m.<\/strong>—Documentary film Manny<\/em><\/a> will be shown at the University Classroom Building (UCB<\/abbr>), room 100.<\/li>\n
  • Public lectures by Ronald Sundstrom<\/a>, professor of philosophy at the University of San Francisco
    \nOctober 16, 11 a.m.<\/strong>—Academic Forum Knowledge, Power and Identity in UCB<\/abbr> 111
    \nOctober 16, 4 p.m.<\/strong>—The Filipino-American Experience and the Post-Racial State in UCB<\/abbr> 127<\/li>\n
  • October 23, 6 p.m.<\/strong>—Gala Night, an evening of dining, choral showcase, Filipino community and student leaders recognition and ballroom dancing, at the Campus Center Dining Room.

  • Cultural presentations by Lane Wilcken, tattoo practitioner and author
