They are all part of what makes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> the leading institution in the nation in integrating science with civic responsibility. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsce.net\/\">National Center for Science and Civic Engagement<\/a> has identified <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as the first model state for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sencer.net\/\">Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities<\/a> (<abbr>SENCER<\/abbr>).  The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> Team was honored at the Washington symposium and national meeting held in late September 2015. U.S. Representative <a href=\"https:\/\/takai.house.gov\/\">Mark Takai<\/a> addressed the audience and spoke with pride about <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s efforts to effectively integrate science with civic engagement and to prepare &ldquo;citizen scientists.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> work is varied and includes social and indigenous sciences with natural sciences as its focus. The now statewide <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team builds on recent work of faculty from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and two groups within its team of <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> practitioners&#8212;the Native Hawaiian Initiative and Hui o Moku.<\/p>\n<p>Hui o Moku is inter-island, interdisciplinary and uses activities such as service learning, and community-based research, to strengthen &ldquo;<abbr>SENCER<\/abbr>ized&rdquo; transfer bridges from community colleges to universities for all students, especially Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island youth.  <\/p>\n<p>The Native Hawaiian Initiative links social and natural sciences to indigenous Hawaiian knowledge. (photo by Ulla Hasager)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Examples of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s multi-institutional, statewide, civically engaged programs include:<\/p>\n<li>The upkeep of Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> campus rain gardens and the ancient Waikalua Loko Fishpond in <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>Marine research and stewardship through Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/paces\/\">Pacific Center for Environmental Studies<\/a> (PaCES) and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> systemwide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/mop\/\">Marine Option Program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The work of students partnering with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/\">The Nature Conservancy<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/malamamaunalua.org\/\">M&#257;lama Maunalua<\/a>, two community groups, to act as citizen scientists and assist with invasive algae removal as part of <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s ecology and the environment lab. <\/li>\n<li>Archaeological field training at Kupopolo Heiau, one of the most significant ancestral places on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8217;s North Shore, through the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/\">Kamehameha Schools&#8217;<\/a> collaborative North Shore Field School. The field school identifies, documents and investigates archaeological artifacts, features and other cultural landscapes. <\/li>\n<li>Ka Holo <span aria-label=\"Waa\">Wa&#699;a<\/span>&#8211;Creating Oceanic Pathways: Walking the Stick of Our Ancestors, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa College of Social Sciences Program for Civic Engagement and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kanehunamoku.org\/\">K&#257;neh&#363;n&#257;moku Voyaging Academy<\/a> partnership, which brings together people of all ages from both Hawaiian and Micronesian communities to share the knowledge of traditional canoe carving methods and navigation techniques. <\/li>\n<li>Service-learning projects that integrate cultural, historic and environmental learning through the M&#257;lama I N&#257; <span aria-label=\"Ahupuaa\">Ahupua&#699;a<\/span> program. The program helps with restoration, maintenance, documentation and oral history collection. Its participants gain knowledge about food sovereignty, sustainability, traditional Hawaiian use of land and water and understand why this knowledge is important today. <\/li>\n<li>Creating policy to address climate change impacts as a part of Climate Change Science and Economics, a <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> Model course offered at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. <\/li>\n<li>Students majoring in a range of various disciplines, many outside <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>, do research on their own sleep experiments through the Science of Sleep, a <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> model course at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. <\/li>\n<li><abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> team members continue to be actively engaged in developing sustainability policies for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System. <\/li>\n<p>Earlier this year at the 2015 <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> Summer Institute in Massachusetts, a new award was presented to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s <abbr>SENCER<\/abbr> team members for the quality of inter-institutional collaborations and deep partnerships that were established to improve the quality of both formal and informal education. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39062\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/system-sencer1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"309\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/system-sencer1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/system-sencer1-260x130.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">College students at work at Waikalua Fishpond in <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Bay.
