{"id":38281,"date":"2015-09-14T15:59:51","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T01:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=38281"},"modified":"2021-07-27T11:31:31","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T21:31:31","slug":"uh-manoa-impressive-in-national-and-international-college-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/09\/14\/uh-manoa-impressive-in-national-and-international-college-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa impressive in national and international college rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hg3jCV-OTSU\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s<\/a> reputation as a nationally recognized and world-class university has been affirmed, after three major university rankings were recently released by the <a fhref=\"https:\/\/collegescorecard.ed.gov\/\">College Scorecard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-colleges\"><em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/\">Academic Ranking of World Universities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Said Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>, &ldquo;These rankings demonstrate that we are truly among the great universities of the world. We&#8217;re also pleased to see that, in terms of a student&#8217;s cost to attend, we&#8217;re actually ranked below the average nationally. So this dynamic combination of high-ranked programs and reasonable cost really shows that we are on the right track. Our university and state have a lot to be proud of.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>College Scorecard<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa ranked above the national average in several categories under the College Scorecard, which was released this weekend by the White House. According to the U.S. Department of Education, <a href=\"https:\/\/collegescorecard.ed.gov\/school\/?141574-University-of-Hawaii-at-Manoa\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa surpassed the national average<\/a> in areas including students repaying their loans (88 percent, compared to the national average of 67 percent), and salaries after attending ($44,300 annually, compared to the national average of $34,343, based on IRS information). <\/p>\n<p>The university also rated highly in terms cost to attend, and for student retention and graduation rates relative to national norms. Specifically, the average annual cost to attend <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa was cited as $11,102 annually, lower than the national average of $16,789 annually. In addition, 78 percent of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa students return after their first year, compared to 67 percent nationally, and 56 percent of students go on to graduate, compared to the national average of 44 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>U.S. News and World Report<\/h2>\n<p>Last week, <em>U.S. News and World Report <\/em>noted that <a href=\"http:\/\/colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-colleges\/university-of-hawaii-1610\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa had improved three spots, moving up from 164 last year to 161<\/a> in the publication&#8217;s 2016 ranking. <em>U.S. News<\/em> surveyed 1,800 colleges among more than 3,000 four-year institutions across the country.<\/p>\n<h2>International rankings<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa received global recognition for its research excellence in recently released international rankings. The Academic Ranking of World Universities, which is based in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ranked <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa in the range of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/World-University-Rankings\/University-of-Hawaii-at-Manoa.html\">66 to 78 in the U.S.<\/a>, and 151 to 200 globally. With 1,200 of the best research universities in the world under consideration for this ranking, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa places in the top 1 percent worldwide out of more than 20,000 universities worldwide. <\/p>\n<p>Other popular international rankings, such as the U.K.-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/\">QS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/\"><em>Times Higher Education&#8217;s<\/em><\/a> world university rankings, placed <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa between 250 and 320 among all universities in the world, and in the range of 60 and 90 among universities in the U.S. As the most well-known university ranking agency in the nation, the <em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em> released its first global ranking in October 2014, when it ranked <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa 107 in the U.S. and 321 in the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-campus.jpg\" alt=\"Manoa campus\" width=\"620\" height=\"367\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-campus.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-campus-260x154.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/miro\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Institutional Research Office<\/a> provides information and research-based analysis of academic rankings, among other data that are helpful to institutional reporting. Because each academic ranking organization uses different methodologies, no single ranking can accurately and thoroughly describe M&#257;noa or its programs.
