From left: Assistant Professor Rae-Anne Montague, Adjunct Faculty member Carol Kellett, Associate Professor and <abbr>LIS<\/abbr> Program Chair Rich Gazan, Governor David Ige, Associate Professor Andrew Wertheimer, Professor Emerita Violet Harada, Professor and <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> Department Chair David Chin, Associate Professor and Associate <abbr>LIS<\/abbr> Program Chair Noriko Asato.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Friday, September 11, 2015, Govenor <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/\">David Ige<\/a> and Lieutenant Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/ltgov.hawaii.gov\/\">Shan Tsutsui<\/a> recognized the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">Library and Information Science<\/a> (<abbr>LIS<\/abbr>) Program by proclaiming September 13 through 19 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Library and Information Science Program Week in honor of the program&#8217;s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;ve gone through many changes in 50 years, but what we all share is a sense that information is more than words on a page,&rdquo; said Library and Information Science Program Chair <strong>Rich Gazan<\/strong>. &ldquo;We create systems and spaces where people can connect with the knowledge and stories of others, so they can find their own voice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>LIS<\/abbr> Program has evolved its curriculum and services to prepare graduates to successfully compete in the world&#8217;s dynamic digital environment, evidenced by its transformation from the original Graduate School of Library Studies to to the current <abbr>LIS<\/abbr> Program in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Information and Computer Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The program has graduated 1628 students, many of whom now serve in public, school, academic and special libraries as well as museum and archives in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the continental United States and in various countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>LIS<\/abbr> Program continues to supply at least half of the professional workforce for information professionals in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, many of them serving in leadership capacities in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Libraries, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.sdp.sirsi.net\/client\/default\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Public Library System<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38255\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-lis-proclamation-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"357\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-lis-proclamation-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/manoa-lis-proclamation-1-260x150.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Library and Information Science Program students and Gov.
