{"id":37852,"date":"2015-08-31T15:22:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T01:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=37852"},"modified":"2021-08-02T14:33:26","modified_gmt":"2021-08-03T00:33:26","slug":"year-long-hi-seas-space-simulation-mission-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/08\/31\/year-long-hi-seas-space-simulation-mission-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Year-long HI-SEAS space simulation mission underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oBJlQnl3sYI\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, August 28, 2015, the six crew members of the fourth <a href=\"http:\/\/hi-seas.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Exploration Analog and Simulation<\/a> or <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> mission entered the solar-powered dome on the slopes of Mauna Loa where they will be living in isolation for one year. The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> research project is simulating long-duration space travel.<\/p>\n<p>Said <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> Principal Investigator <strong>Kim Binsted<\/strong>, &ldquo;The fourth mission is longer than any mission we&#8217;ve done before, so the first two were four months, the next one was eight months and we&#8217;re finally doing a full year long mission.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr><\/a>, the mission will build on previous research on crew member cohesion and performance over time.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need to understand how to pick crews and how to support crews while they&#8217;re on the mission in order for us to get to Mars and back safely,&rdquo; added Binsted.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m looking forward to getting to act like an astronaut for a year, because I&#8217;ve wanted to be an astronaut for most of my life,&rdquo; said <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> crew member <strong>Andrzej Stewart<\/strong>. &ldquo;I&#8217;m not a real astronaut yet but I&#8217;m getting closer and closer to that dream and this is a step in that direction.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The morning the crew entered the <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> dome, <strong>Carmel Johnston<\/strong> browsed a local Hilo music shop on a personal mission of her own.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Here I&#8217;m trying to find a ukulele so I can learn a new skill set while I&#8217;m in the dome,&rdquo;
