  {"id":37714,"date":"2015-08-24T16:40:15","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T02:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=37714"},"modified":"2021-08-05T11:23:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T21:23:22","slug":"students-receive-free-textbooks-as-part-of-15-to-finish-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/08\/24\/students-receive-free-textbooks-as-part-of-15-to-finish-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Students receive free textbooks as part of 15 to Finish initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen students from across the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System<\/a> won free textbooks for fall 2015 in the <a href=\"http:\/\/15tofinish.com\/bookstore-promotion\/\">15 to Finish <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Bookstores promotion<\/a> worth approximately $10,000.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookstore.hawaii.edu\/main\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Bookstores<\/a> to provide freshmen an opportunity to win free textbooks for the following fall semester if they completed 30 or more credits in their first year. The promotion reduces the cost associated with obtaining a post secondary degree, while bringing awareness to the fact that taking at least 15 credits per semester helps students be on track to graduate on time. <\/p>\n<p>The following students will receive free textbooks for the fall 2015 semester: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kulaiapahia Aluli, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Piper Axtell, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Jessie Caberto, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/li>\n<li>Micah Carter, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/li>\n<li>Allison Jean Comlat, Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Evan Hataishi, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/li>\n<li>Mikiala Holley, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/li>\n<li>Gunnar Hudson, Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Samantha Manipon, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Charles Matsuda, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Kara Meske, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/li>\n<li>Mari Ogino, Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Hinako Suyama, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Sean Takehara, Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Robert Valdez, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/li>\n<li>Edward Wang, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Mieko Yajima, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>Kelli Ann Zane, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Our goal is to continue to build awareness of the fact that a student must take at least 15 credits a semester or 30 credits in a year to complete their degree on time,&rdquo; said <strong>Risa Dickson<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System vice president for academic affairs. &ldquo;In the past, taking 12 credits per semester was most common, but we want students to change that mindset. Research has also shown that students taking 15 credits or more do better academically. Completing a degree on time is the best way to reduce educational costs and start earning an income.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Bookstores Director <strong>Tricia Ejima<\/strong> added, &ldquo;We&#8217;re happy to support the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System with its <a href=\"http:\/\/15tofinish.com\/\">15 to Finish campaign<\/a> by rewarding students with free textbooks. We take pride in providing our students with everything they need for college and this was just one more way for us to give back.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/15tofinish.com\/bookstore-promotion\/\">Learn about the 15 to Finish fall 2015 promotion<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Bookstores randomly selected 18 students from more than 1,400 eligible students, and will generously offer this promotion again to incoming freshmen. First-time freshmen who enter a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus in the fall semester and earn at least 30 credits by the end of May the following year will be eligible for the promotion.
