The ocean view from P&#257;lamanui is typically sunny and blue.  About 400 students in the area were projected to begin either <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> classes or distance-learning classes offered by other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses. <\/p>\n<p>The $27-million first phase of the P&#257;lamanui campus includes 24,000 square feet of learning space comprised of classrooms, teaching kitchens, science labs and a nursing lab. The campus plans to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification. Among the planned features of the new campus are photovoltaic canopies over the parking lot and a Living Machine natural wastewater recycling system. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our goal is to transform students&#8217; lives through higher education, and this new branch campus will ensure we are delivering quality, affordable college programs to our entire <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island community,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College Chancellor <strong>Noreen Yamane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37707\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"248\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui-260x104.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui (photo by Thatcher Moats)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Permanent Kona facility<\/h2>\n<p>Until today, West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> had been the only major geographic region and population center in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> without a permanent facility for higher education. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This campus is crazy. It&#8217;s really, really nice,&rdquo; <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> CC\u2013P&#257;lamanui student <strong>Keanu Ushiroda<\/strong> said.  &ldquo;I wasn&#8217;t expecting it to be looking like this.  It&#8217;s kind of passed my expectations.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui Director <strong>K. Marty Fletcher<\/strong> said, &ldquo;Holding our first classes today at this wonderful campus is a credit to the vision of the West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> community. Community members, their elected representatives and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System have worked hard over many years toward establishing West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s own higher education landmark.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The first day of classes at P&#257;lamanui marked a milestone for university, government and community leaders who have been working to build a permanent home for higher education in West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for more than two decades.  <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37704\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hawaii C C-Palamanui campus\" width=\"620\" height=\"379\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hawaii-palamanui-1-260x159.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo by Thatcher Moats)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Increasing higher education opportunities in West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;We thank everyone who was responsible for P&#257;lamanui for their support,&rdquo; said <strong>John Morton<\/strong>, vice president for <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a>. &ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> is committed to increasing the opportunity for higher education in West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, not just with programs from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College but also by continuing to serve as a University Center to deliver programs from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa as well.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>P&#257;lamanui LLC, a partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwab.com\/\">Charles R. Schwab<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huntcompanies.com\/\">Hunt Companies<\/a>, has offered significant financial support to help fund the development by contributing $9.68 million for construction and $10 million in infrastructure improvements for water, power and sewer that directly benefit the college. P&#257;lamanui LLC has been planning a mixed-use community on 725 acres adjacent to the campus to support the long-term needs of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Three science classes are continuing to be held at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Center&#8217;s previous site in Kealakekua, because customized laboratory equipment has not yet been delivered and installed.
