Burns School of Medicine's garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/nhcoe\/\">Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence<\/a>, in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\" http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, and Bishop Museum will\u00a0present a series, Native Food, Native Stories, from February through May. The workshops will cover <span aria-label=\"awa\">&#699;awa<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu (breadfruit), <span aria-label=\"uala\">&#699;uala<\/span> (sweet potato) and <span aria-label=\"hee\">he&#699;e<\/span> (octopus).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These were popular foods in traditional times and continue to be enjoyed in contemporary <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&rdquo; said <strong>Mele Look<\/strong>, director of community engagement in the Department of Native Hawaiian Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Look adds that the three plant foods are also cultivated at the medical school&#8217;s M&#257;la <span aria-label=\"Lapaau\">Lapa&#699;au<\/span> (medical garden) and the <span aria-label=\"hee\">he&#699;e<\/span> can be found in the coastal waters off of the medical school&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Kakaako\">Kaka&#699;ako<\/span> facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Native Food, Native Stories workshops schedule<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>February 2&#8212;The Ceremonial and Social Usages of <span aria-label=\"Awa\">&#699;Awa<\/span> in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Then and Now at 6 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>March 17&#8212;The <span aria-label=\"Ulu\">&#699;Ulu<\/span> Workshop at 9 a.m. (Tickets for the <span aria-label=\"ulu\">&#699;ulu<\/span> plate lunch may be purchased for $20 per person. Call (808) 847-8296 for reservations.)<\/li>\n<li>April 12&#8212;He Mala: <span aria-label=\"Uala\">&#699;Uala<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> Piko: A Force for Life, Health and Genealogical Connection at 6 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>May 10&#8212;The Lure and Lore of <span aria-label=\"Hee\">He&#699;e<\/span>: Fishing Traditions of the Kewalo Family at 6 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tuition for each workshop is $10 for the general public and free for Bishop Museum members.
