New research recently published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en.html>American Chemical Society<\/a> (<abbr>ACS<\/abbr>) journal <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.est.5b01879\"><em>Environmental Science and Technology<\/em><\/a> sheds light on why fecal contamination affects sand more than water.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> Associate Professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cee.hawaii.edu\/\">Civil and Environmental Engineering<\/a> <strong>Tao Yan<\/strong> and  <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student <strong>Qian Zhang<\/strong> researched why in the past decade, scientists have been finding fecal bacteria in beach sand at levels 10 to 100 times higher than in nearby seawater.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers created microcosms of beach sand and seawater contaminated with sewage in a lab to see how the overall bacterial populations, including fecal dwellers responsible for causing illness, would change over time.<\/p>\n<p>They found that microbial communities tended to decay much slower in the simulated beach sand environment than in the water, which could help explain why more fecal bacteria are found on sandy beaches affected by waste water pollution than in the waves.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For a beach, the sand is as important as the water, but our monitoring efforts have been placed almost exclusively on the latter,&rdquo; said Yan. &ldquo;Results of this study support the need for a holistic beach management approach that includes sand, which can help further advance our goal of public health protection.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/health.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Health<\/a> provided additional funding for the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>News coverage:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/worst-place-for-bacteria-beach-sand-water\/\">&ldquo;The worst place for bacteria at the beach,&rdquo;<\/a> CBS News, July 17, 2015<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wtvr.com\/2015\/07\/20\/study-beach-sand-may-be-dirtier-than-the-water\/\">&ldquo;Study: Beach sand may be dirtier than the water,&rdquo;<\/a> WTVR, July 20, 2015<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36880\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-sand-bacteria.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"416\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-sand-bacteria.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-sand-bacteria-260x174.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The decay of fecal indicator bacteria and the change of microbial community structure were slower in beach sand than in seawater.
